Women's Orthopaedic Slippers
What actually makes a slipper "orthopaedic," not just soft?
Most slippers are designed around one thing: softness. An orthopaedic slipper is designed around support instead — a firm sole that doesn't collapse underfoot, a secure closure that holds the foot in place rather than a loose slip-on style, and enough room through the width and depth to fit properly without pressure points. Softness still matters for comfort, but on its own it doesn't hold your foot the way a supportive slipper does.
Why a firm sole still matters indoors
It's easy to assume support only matters in "real" shoes worn outside, but most falls for older adults happen at home, often in slippers or socks rather than proper footwear. A soft, unstructured slipper with no heel support gives the foot far less to work with than a supportive one — see our guide to footwear and fall prevention for the research behind why a firm sole matters, indoors and out.
Who wears our women's slippers
🦶 Swollen feet or oedema
Extra width and depth accommodate feet that change size through the day, without the shoe feeling loose or unstable.
🩺 Diabetes or neuropathy
A soft, seam-free interior and secure fit reduce friction points on feet with reduced sensation.
🚶♀️ Reduced mobility or balance concerns
A firm sole and secure closure give more stability getting up from a chair or moving around at home.
🏠 All-day home comfort
Support that holds up over a full day at home, not just for a quick walk to the letterbox.
Features to look for in a supportive slipper
| Feature | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| 🦶 Firm, supportive sole | Holds its shape underfoot instead of collapsing, giving the foot something stable to push against |
| 🔒 Secure, adjustable closure | Keeps the foot in place — a plain slip-on can let the foot slide, especially on stairs |
| ↔️ Wide fit & extra depth | Room for swelling, orthotics or a wider foot shape without pressure points |
| ☁️ Soft, breathable interior | Reduces friction and keeps feet comfortable over a full day of wear |
| 🚫 Non-slip outsole | Grips on tiled or timber floors, where a plain fabric sole can slide |

Frequently asked questions
What makes a slipper "orthopaedic"?
A firm, supportive sole, a secure adjustable closure, and enough width and depth to fit the foot properly — the same principles as a well-fitted shoe, built into a slipper.
Are women's slippers covered by NDIS, DVA or my Home Care Package?
Often, yes. NDIS participants with a diagnosis affecting their feet, DVA gold and white card holders, and Home Care Package recipients may be eligible for funding — see our NDIS and DVA-approved footwear pages, or ask us when you book.
Can I wear these if I have swollen feet or diabetes?
Yes — the wide, extra-depth fit and soft interior are designed to accommodate swelling and reduce friction for sensitive feet. If you're not sure which width or depth you need, we check this in a fitting rather than guessing from a size chart.
What's the difference between these and a regular slipper?
A regular slipper is built around softness alone. An orthopaedic slipper adds a firm sole, secure closure and proper width and depth, so it supports and stabilises the foot rather than just cushioning it.
